NINETY-FIFTH BIRTHDAY.
AUCKLANDER'S LONG LIFE. The 95th birthday of Mr. W. Hanson, of Disraeli Street, Grey Lynn, was celebrated by a gathering of friends at his residence on Monday evening. Mr. Hanson arrived at Auckland in the qhip Evening Star, in December, 1858, and has resided in the province ever since. In the earlier years he lived at Silverdale and Coromandel, but for the last 40 or 50 years his home has been in the city. Before coming to New Zealand, Mr. Hanson was engaged in shipbuilding in the North of England, and after his arrival in Auckland he built several coastal craft for the late Mr. C. J. Stone and others. In his later years he carried on the business-of a builder, carpenter, and undertaker. He is in excellent health, despite his years, and has the use of all his faculties. In reply to a few words of congratulation from the Rev. C. H. Laws, Mr. H. Field, and others, Mr. Hanson gave a short address with his old-time force and vigor. He has been a member of the Methodist denomination for nearly 78 years, having joined that Church as a youth of 17, in 1842.
