WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) ■ Jan. 13. At tho School Committee meeting on Monday night, the matter of spending some of the money that was in hand was discussed, and members agreed that under the present uncertainty as to whether a new school was going to be built, here it would probably be a waste of money in spending it around the present school, though there was a good deal which needed attention. The matter of a telephone for the school Was brought up, but the majority of the members did not think the expense would be justified. Mr. C- R. Stead returned from a trip through the Wellington, Nelnon, and Wairarapa districts on Saturday, and re-opened his office on Monday. A Government r wool valuation took place in Waitara yesterday. The prices of last valuation were maintained. The sub-committee of the North Taranaki Horticultural Society spent the most of Tuesday afternoon drawing up a schedule for the show, which it is proposed to hold in the latter end of February, or early in March. The Waitara Seaside Improvement and Surf Bathing Society have given notice to the Royal Life Saving Society of their desire to hold the Tabor Shield competition on February 26. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. There were present: Crs. Ogle (deputy-Mayor, in the chair), Beckbessinger, Jones, Johnston, Gribbon, and Rennie. Cr. Blair was granted leave of absence. The Electric Light Committee were authorised to purchase a dwelling for lease to an employee, if required. Mr. H. Ellingham waited on the Council re the price the Council had decided to charge for water, £7. He said that if the charge was reduced by half the Clifton County Council would probably have the water laid on to the toll' house. It was decided that no exception could be made. An application for water by Mr. 0. Passan, of Lepperton, was granted. An application for a rise in wages of Is per day from the employees of the Council was granted. sanitation charges and asked for a refund—Referred to the Works Committee. An application from Gaustad, Marlow, and Co. for an auctioneer's license was granted. Mrs. Christie wrote stating that she had lost a heifer valued at £25 in one of the Council's drains. The Council decided they could accept no responsibility. Cr. Ronnie moved that a meeting be held on the 20th. inst. to decide on the day for the half-holiday. He stated that New Plymouth was holding a meeting on Monday next, and Wauara could follow their lead. The health officer wrote that the owner of a house in Brown Street, which had been condemned, had not had the repairs demanded by the Health Department executed, and he asked the Council to notify the owner that the house must be attended to.—Resolved that a copy of the letter be sent to ihe owner. A letter was received from the Harbor Board granting permission to remove stone from Karaka Flat. It was decided to inform the dog tax collector that native owners were liable to the tax. A letter from the Public Works Department was received pointing out that certain repairs to the Waita-a bridge had not been attended to, anil as the bridge was considered unsafe in 1915, and was on a main road, the Council was asked to have the matter attended to as soon as possible.—Referred to the Works Committee to report on. It was resolved to call for tenders for posts for -West Quay pound. Authority was given to the deputyMayor to sign cheques on behalf of the Council when necessary. The Council then sat as a Domain Board. It was resolved that the Borough "solicitor be instructed to draw i:p a lease for the Tennis Club of a portion of the Camp Reserve under the Domains' ActA hearty vote of welcome was accorded to Mr. C. H. Tate on his resuming his position as town clerk. The Domain Board then adjourned.
