SHIPPING STRIKE.
AN ABORTIVE CONFERENCE. THE DEADLOCK CONTINUES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 15, 1.20 a.m. Melbourne, Jan. 14. The conference of shipowners with the marine engineers with a *iew to a settlement of the engineers' Btrike proved futile. The Shipping Controller informed Mr. W. M. Hughes (the Federal Premier) that the engineers declined to comprom 1 . ise on their original demands. Mr. Hughes then spent two hours in a talk with the members of the executive, but efforts to reach an agreement failed. The representatives leave for their homes to-night and the Btrike continues.
