HOUSING PROBLEM.

GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE FOR LOCAL BODIES. Christohurch, Jan. 12. Replying to the Mayor's letter urging that financial assistance be given to the Christohurch City Council to enable it to carry out a comprehensive housing scheme, the Prime Minister states that the request will come before Cabinet at an early date.

He adds: "The Government is anxious to render every possible assistance to local bodies and others in carrying out schemes for the housing of the people of the Dominion, but it will be readily understood that the loams granted by the Government are limited by the Act of last year, and the amount that mav be lent to the Christchureh City Council will depend upon the number' of applications, received from othW similar bodies."
