NO SHORTAGE OF SPACE. THE CONTRACT QUESTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Referring to statements made regarding shortage of space in the frozen meat stores, the Prime Minister states the exact position is shown in the following official statement— The quantity of meat in store on 15th. December for which no shipping epace allocations had been made was 3,934,389 001b freight carcases. As much of this meat is telescoped, for the purpose of arriving at the syace occupied in the works this quantity is reducible by approximately 700,000 DOib carcases, ieaving the net amount not provided for on lath December of 3,234.389 COlb carcases. The total storage capacity of tho works is at present 7,715,367 801b uncut carcases, so by reducing this latter quantity hv 3,234,389 carcases previously referred to, a balance is left capable of*accommodating 4,483,973 (SOlb uncut carcases. There is nothing definite regarding the extension of the Imperial meat purchase. The New Zealand Government is pressing for an early decision, hut' the latest ad°vice by table from the High Commissioner gives little information. It is as follows:—"With reference to vour telegram of ■ 23rd December ■ the 'Board of Trade states that the whole question of the extension of meat oo'itracts is at present before the Imperial Government Riid they cannot give a definite reply yet. They, however, point out that in any case the Board of Trade will he responsible for the shipment of anv meat purchased under the present agreement and in cold storage in New Zealand on June 30.
