DOMINION'S FUTURE.
REMARKS BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL. "ORDEAL OF INTENSE COMPETITION." Christclmrcli, Jan.' 8. In an .address at a ceremony in connection with extensions to freezing works at Kainpoi to-day, the GovernorGeneral said that 'New Zealand, in comparison, has during the last five years been suffering far less than any other part of the world, and its prosperity has not been deminished. "It lies in the hands of its population whether or not that prosperity shall continue," said His Excellency.. "There is a large debt _to lueet. -It.cannoi, be liquidated hy a process of borrowing. It can only' be met 'by the individual industry of each mem- ■ uer of the community endeavoring to raise the output of trade and commerce, ;aml so increase the total revenue of the Dominion further."
"So far as our domestic affairs are concerned,, we must be prepared to have to face for some considerable time a period of intense competition with other countries, and it depends entirely on ourselves how we shall emerge from the ordeal. There is no glamor in reconstruction, but, the nation is even more in the limelight, than during the years of war. Personally, I have no fear that the zeal and energy of the people will not meet the demand which is now being made on their physical powers. They assisted to' carry through the war to a successful conclusion, and I cannot doubt that the. present difficulties will be surmounted by a like spirit of determination "
