ELEVATION OF LABOR MEMBER. By Telejraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. S, 1030 p.m. Brisbane, Jan. 8. The appointment of Mr. W. Lennon, a member of the Labor Party, a3 Lieuten-ant-Governor, produced a scene in the Assembly. Mr. Barnes, ev-Treasurer, expressed strong disapproval on the ground that Mr. Lennon had endorsed disloyal utterances made by the Cabinet, Mr. Barnes adding, "And now, forsooth, he is thrown upon the State as Lieutenant-Governor on the recommendation of this Government." The chairman ordered Mr. Barnes to withdraw the words, but he refused. He was suspended and left the House amid uproar, as a protest against freedom of speech.
