The latest phase of the marine engineers' trouble is that the executive asked the shipping companies to confer with a view to an early settlement. The Shipping Controller agreed, providing the conference was held at Melbourne. INTER-STATE TRAFFIC STOPPED. Sydney, Jan. 7. As a result of the marine engineers' strike all inter-State shipping traffic is at a standstill. There are five thousand unemployed and eighty thousand tons of shipping is idle. The Sydney whavfies have asked the Federal Government for a sustenance allowance while the strike continues. MARINE STEWARDS' DEMANDS. Melbourne, Jan. 7. The marine stewards and pantrymen have decided to support the decision of the Sydney branch. [The Sydney Stewards' and Pantrymen's Association demanded increases in pay ranging from 22 to 27% per cent., overtime pay for Sundays and holidays, an eight-hour day while at sea and in intermediate ports, and six hours while in terminal ports, a month's holiday for chief stewards, and a fortnight for fill other ranks on full pay.]
