GROWTH OF LABOR VOTE. SUPPORT OF MIDDLE-CLASSES. By Tolecraph.—Press Asan.—CopyrlJht. Received Jan. 5, 7.20 p.m. London, Jan. 4, The newspapers regaTd the Spen Valley result as the severest blow to the Coalition Government since the general election. They explain that the remarkable growth of the Labor vote at recent byelections is due to the lower section of the middle classes, who arc squeezed by taxation and the cost of living, and arc transferring their votes to Labor. They are not alarmed at Labor's policy of the nationalisation of the coal mines and the public services, and of a levy on capi-tal.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
[The Spen Valley by-election resulted: —T. Myers (Labor) 11,962; Sir John Simon (Independent-Liberal) 10,244; Fairfax (Coalition Liberal) 8134. At the last general election, .Sir Thomas Whittaker (Coalition Liberal) had a majority of over 2000 over Mr. Myers.]
