ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Saturday, Jan. 0. Some of the shops are opening up again, and generally bracing themselves up in readiness to start the New Year in earnest. The district has had a holiday. This has been made possible by the falling milk yield, and a late harvest. Outside of Boxing Day Sports we have had to go for our amusement to the surrounding towns-. The New Plymouth picnic. Stratford Races and Ngaere Oardens have all been well patronised by people from this town. On New Year's Eve the Pipe Band received on inviation from a number of ffawera Scots to visit them and liven the town up. By eight p.m. a full muster was secured, and away they went per motor lorry. All are agreed that it was a real good night. Hawera was crowded, and this member had an opportunity of meeting many old friends. After playing the New Year in they left for home. Welcome rain has fallen at intervals the last few days and to-day it threatens, but so far only a shower has come along. However, things are fresher.
