WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) January ',i. New Year's Eve, which usually is fairly ' lively, was very quiet, and after the pictures had started very few people were to be seen about the streets. The. shops, contrary to the usual custom, closed at 7.M0 or thereabouts, after a very successful day. The Stratford races enticed a lot, of people from Waitara on New Year's Day and yesterday, but I have not heard of anyone coming home with a large amount of foreign capital.
The picnic at the beach yesterday was a very successful affair, though tile absence of the band was very noticeable. The treasure hunt was fairly well patronised, but, with the experience gained, there-is no doubt it could be greatly improved. The ground fenced tin was rather too big, and the prizes buried rather deeply. Only six prizes out of eighteen were found, and I daresay some of the boys are digging yet. The men and Indies of the committee worked well, and they are to be congratulated on the success of the gathering, but they were too few, more than half the committee being absent. It was a very hot afternoon, and ice creams and soft drinks sold like wildfire, and kept the members of the committee in charge of this department very busy. The afternoon tea was also exceedingly well patronised, and added a substantial' sum to the funds. The net't proceeds of the afternoon will be about £2O. Of this amount £3 6s lOd was put into the contribution box.
