FIRES.

BIG BLAZE AT NELSON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Nelson, Jan. 3. " A disastrous fire occurred in a wooden building occupied by Mr. P. Webster, provision merchant, part of Trathen and Co., drapers and milliners, and Shield and Co. wine and spirit merchants. The Fire Brigade fought with great determination, but the flames, having a good hold when discovered, spread rapidly in the wooden buildings. Webster is a heavy loser, no stock being saved- A good deal was saved from Shield's premises. Tralhen's clothing and millinery department, being in a brick building, was saved, but the main building, together with reserve stocks was totally destroyed. Trathen's loss ran into' thousands. The origin is a mystery. It is believed the fire started near Webster's premises. Insurances: Trathen's stock .£BBSO, building £750; Webter's stock £7OO, building £f>oo; Shield's- building £2OO. The latter's stock was owned by Levin and Co.
