GALA DAY FOR THE CHILDREN. Splendid weather held for. the second day of the New Year holiday.. . The principal attraction, in New Plymouth was the nicnic. .organised by the East End Reserve Committee. . This seaside resort was well patronised, there being a large gathering of .people, in which, of course, young folks predominated. This, latter is. a great asset to. the reserve, as. it. provides an absolutely 3afe bathing place for little■.. children,.. wherein they can sport themselves to their heart's content. A generous supply, of prize.s. had_.been donated, and the committee were able, to be liberal in their awards for the competitive events. The afternoon tea room and the. soft drinks .and ice. cream stall did flourishing business. . .There were a number of competitions, etc., but as in the case. of the. Ngamotu, the committee are not completing these until the Queen Carnival Competition is brought, to a-close, on the 20th. inst. Surf bathing was indulged in .practically all day long, and all.who went to the reserve spent a very enjoyable day.. A very successful., dance was held in the pavilion last, night, at which there was a good .attendance.... A. similar function took place on .Thursday.night, and the proceeds of these will, go to improve the .position of. the, East End queen.
