NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to Dally News.) t Auckland, Last Night. Derby day at Ellerslie brought another large attendance and the totalisator receipts amounted to £118,544 10s, making an increase so far over last year of £134,300, no less than £237,062 being recorded for the three days far.

The Great Northern Derby witnessed (he unexpected defeat of Rossini, after that strong favorite appeared to have the honors well within his grasp Inside the distance. Rosa Wreath mads the pace right up to the distance, when Rossini had moved up with Royal Stag, who was also In the Tear In the early stages, the pair entering Into the final struggle. Deeley was at Rossini with his hands and heels Inside 100 yards from home, and realising that Boyal Stag might just defeat him, applied the whip to the favorite, who flinched at its application, swerving across the course. By so doing he lost a couple of lengths and when the mistake was realised and Deeley adopted the easy tactics it was too late, for Sir George Clifford's candidate was past the post first by half a length. Bose Wreath was third, only three-quarters of a length further back. Over £IO,OOO was invested on the event, Rossini carrying dose on £BOOO of the pool, the winner returning double figures to his supporters. The difference In the poundage la Moorfowl's favor over Humbug, and the shorter distance, saw Mooifowl's victory In the Midsummer Handicap of five furlongs, the winner being early In front, and Humbug being slow to begin. He got up In the straight, but his Bst. 71b told, and he was beaten Into third place. This pair of two-year-olds will have to meet Bight and Left In the Royal Stakes the latter having a distinct advantage In poundage, an<} If Gloaming starts. Bight and Left may be considered Gloaming's most dangerous opponent, for he was a little unlucky when he finished op second In the Foal Stakes to Humbug. However, Moorfowl's beginning qualities may play a part, though no one will go seriously past Gloaming If started. The racing Club Handicap ended In a great finish with honors to Gray's mount Vagabond over the considered Uncle Ned at the close. Hangamahoe, who finished third, made the pace fast out in front, while Mascot and Kllmoon were handy to the placed horses. The latter may Improve, while Dusky Eve was prominent throughout and can be looked for to do better later. B. 1. Hannon's team accounted for three events. King Abbey hit the front early In the Ferguson Hack Handicap, and stayed there to win from Ruatara, who did not meet with a pleasant passage, and Night Time, who is due for a hack event shortly. Rekanul captured the hurdle event almost from end to end ftom a moderate lot, while Hannon also provided the winner of the open sprint event In Queen Abbey, who got to the front when they settled down, and finally won from the Railway Handicap victor, Tlgritiya, who made a game bid under 9.3. Gazique finished fast in third place after being in a bad position early. A warm favorite in Te Oro was-beaten into second place In the Ellerslie Mndicap by Starland, a candidate from Mr. G. L. Stead's (table, who stayed on well and gathered the coin. A vast amount of money came In support of this son of Nassau and Stardancer, and he should make a stayer of no mean order as time goes on. The rest were • moderate class.

A mild surprise was in store for the Glasgow Handicap, which went to Escaped, who returned double figures, probably because he was ridden by an apprentice. Neither Mill o' Gowrie, Nlghtralder, or Ohlnewairua, the best-backed trio, found place money, Rockfleld and Trespass being in the places behind Escaped, who found the front early and won all out by a head from Rockfleld, who carried a deal of confidence from his connections. Bitholla failed badly under pressure. FOURTH DAY'S ACCEPTANCES.

"Racegoer" (Hawera) writes:—l have been a regular attendant at your race meetings for some years now, and there was onlv one thing worse than the weather of the first day, and that was the way the jockeys' board was run—too slow for anything. Tnranakl being a metropolitan club should surely do better Hoping the hint will be talieu for the next meeting.

[lnquiry into the above matter elicited the fact that the steward who usually controls the board fell ill the night before the first day of the meeting, and the officials had t > depend upon his first assistant, a youth of about 17, who they considered, under the circumstances, carried out his duties very well.—Ed.]

TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The recently concluded Manawatu R.C. Summer meeting was unite the most successful hold »n the pretty Awapuni course, and made the notorious Biplane-loomed meeting of several seasons ago look very small fish. The racing track was in perfect condition. Smooth as a billiard tabie, close clipped and green—a fine testimonial to the good work of the club's groundsmen during a trying period. The lawns were equally perfect, while the flower beds, shrubs, and shady trees did much to enhance the beauty of the scene.

It was a smart set congregation of sporting folk, the fair sex in particular being dressed right up to the minute. It was a galaxy of dazzling head-gear; loose, flowing costumes, short skirts, and a generous display of silk hose. Hand-painted stockings, and leather topped boots that would cost a good man a week's wages, wero much In evidence, while one astounding daime flaunted a gold—l almost said wristlet—a gold "leglet" watch upon her shapely ankle! (I could tell you mora, but I see the Religious Editor reaching for the blue pencil).

But after all, despite lis beautiful surroundings, perfect course, and irreproachable management, the Manawatu meeting left several tilings to be desired. The semaphore 13 in the wrong place; the system of chalking up the riders' names in an obscure corner ot' the birdcage, and the even move feeble chalking up of overweights, allowances, etc., in quite another oliscm-i! plane, are all clean out-of-date I would recommend Mr. .7. M. Johnston and his worthy confreres to take a run up to Taranaki, and see liow we do things here. All these tiresome disadvantageous arrangements should bo swept right away, and a semaphore erected in the outside as at New Plymouth,. Hawera, and Stratford, where all nartieuJars are shown on the one structure, ni numerals and letters large enough to bo easily read by both inside and outside patrons. Why the expenditure of a few hundred pounds should keep in the background such a successul club, and a club with a wonderful future, is beyond one's comprehension. Before leaving the subject I would like to remark on the extraordinary large number of Slratford sportsimen attending tj le Manawatu meeting, when they had a race meeting ■in their own province, at. New Piymouih. Of course it. Is every man's business where he goes lacing, but there should lie -some locn l patriotism about ail sport, and it looks anything but sportsmanship to seo office-bearers passing (tree near-by provincial meetings and giving their patronage to more distant' outsido gatherings.

Tho class of hurdlers seen out at Awanunl was very poor, and outside Maraetotara compared anything but favorably with our home jumpers. Gang Awa's sickness on the eve of M 1" ? ee £ ,n 5, was - particularly unfortunate for Mr F. S. Enston, as the black gelding would certainly have won at 2east one of the stick events. Maraetotara won her race in hollow fashion, and she could linve (almost) carried the rest, and won the three races. Hautawa and hail Home aTe good fencers, but. have only one speed. Hushahye and Zeus shaped poorlv and the rest were only "battlers " ■ One interesting exhibit, produced on the i-.second day, was Fisher, tho disappointing son jot Manlapoto and Jsduam. He looked really •.well, and was galloping nicely, when Fier'v .Lass skidded and brought him it "busier " 'iFlsher is in his eighth your, and nt he tus

not secured a. stake since January, 19U, his prospects do not look dazzling. Winter Wind's defeat in tha Palmerston Stakes was one of tho sensations of tha moating, and without attempting to belittle Acres wonderful winning effort, it was quite recognised that the two-year-old was very unlucky. With only 7.2 in the saddle It was madness to hold him bade with Acto (8.8), and try to race such a determined finisher over tha last couple of furlongs. Winter Wind should have been bustled to the front at once, especially as he has the speedy Croesus to carry him along, Strange to say, u two-year-old lias never won the race. This happened in a hurdle vaco during the holidays. A horse came down at a hurdle and was "winded." His rider escaped with a shaking, and while waking his way to the birdcage was accosted by the alarmed owner of the horse. "Is he hurt?" asked the owner in anguished tones. "No, I don't think so,'* replied the disgusted Jock, "I only rolled on him twice 1"

When a jockstor sets himself out to bo sarcastic he takes some beating. A crack horseman was asked to rldo a "dark horse" at a recent meeting, and was advised to "have a few quid on him," as he would "fly" in. Judge his disgust, however, when ho found that the farther they went tho farther his mount fell behind, and when he stopped riding at the home bend the horse was quite two hundred yards behind the field. "What happened?" inquired the owner, when the Jockster eventually reached the enclosure. "Oh, nothing," was the reply, "I think he would have Just about won if he hadn't got chopped out at tho home bendl" Now the owner is wondering why the by-standers laughed.
