SWIMMING CARNIVAL.
EXHIBITION AT MUNICIPAL BATHS
The exhibition of fancy swimming and diving, and other events, which was given at the Municipal Baths last night, ivas a distinct success, notwithstanding that Mr. J. Enwright, who was to be the star attraction for the occasion, was not present. There wa's a good attendance, the warm summer evening being ideal for such a carnival, tempted many people to the baths. The principal items on the programme were those of Messrs Mathieson and Christiansen, two well-known veterans in the art, who gave very entertaining exhibitions of ornamental swimming. Although many of the items they put on have been seen here before, they lose no interest by repetition, and the clean and graceful work of theee two swimmers is always a pleasure to watch. Mr Christiansen's act of undressing in the water, and the swimming of Mr Mathieson with both hands and feet tied together, elicited hearty applause, as did also their somersaulting and "spinning top" items. They also gave some special stroke swimming exhibitions and fancy high-diving. There were a few competitive events, the results of which were as follow: 100 yards race (open), N. Winter; pil-low-fighting, Gibson; diving for plates, Winter: diving for plates (boys), Gibson; di*ing under the life-buoy, Penman and Gibson (equal). During the evening an orchestra, under the leadership of Mrs Moverlev, contributed a number . of selections which added to the enjoyment of the occasion. The promoters of the carnival are to be congratulated on the success of the function.
