STRATFORD.

The magisterial recount of votes cast in the Stratford electorate, for which an application lias been lodged by Major Hine, has been fixed by -Mr. 1. A. Ji. Bailey, S.M., for Tuesday, January b. Moat of the shopkeepers in Stratioul re-opened after the Christmas holidays to-day. Though four days is a !on J=' time * for business houses to remain closed continuously, the public have not, apparently, suffered in any way, and according to the shopkeepers the volume of business done for the Christmas season was greater than ever. A fair number of people were in the streets to-day, but the town was quieter than in normal times, many of those who were free from the ties of business having left on holiday. . , , On Sunday, the weather, which had been cold and boisterous, changed completely for the better. Yesterday, many* took advantage of the fine day to visit the mountain. The gnow-hne is vet verv low, but a group of climbers t ascended the southern slopes to a point well within the snow area. ( Many people are spending their holidays at the Dawson Falls' Mountain House. The road through the reserve to the house I is in good ordex for motoring, and. the tracks leading to the places pf interest > on the mountain are, with the exception I of a few patehes, quite dry and easy to traverse. The King's Cinema Picture Theatre proprietors have installed a. _ British Weatinghouse twin cylinder engine and generator, capable of providing the whole of the power and lighting necessary for the theatre. The plant will be working in a couple of days and the company will then be independent of the municipal supply. The music at the picture Bhowa will, in future, be provided by Rogers' orchestra consisting of Mrs. C. Rogers, Misses E. and A. Rogers, Mt. A. Itelby, and Mr. W. J. Litchwark. ' - The main attraction at Stratford on Thursday evening next will be a big dance iu the Town Hall. The music will be by Fox's orchestra of sis players, fart of the proceeds will be handed over 1 to the 'Stratford Druid's Lodge fund. At the recent annual meeting of the Gun Club the following office-bearers were appointed for the ensuing year:—President. H. Harrison; vice-presidents, R. ,T. Knuckey, G. D. Hunter; committee, R. J. Knuckey, A. Stewart, P. Casey, W D. Colfion, B. Green, A. Nelson, F. O'Connor; handicapper and referee, H. Campbell; lion, see., C. L. Grant; treasurer, V. Whittle; auditor, A. Stewart. Votes o£ thanks were accorded Messrs Nelson and Green for the use of their grounds and to the president for his active services during the year.
