A by-election at Maranoa to fill the seat vacated by Mr. Hunter, who has liecn appointed Agent-General in London, refiulted in Mr. Spencer, a Primary Producers' candidate, defeating the Labor representative. Labor has held the seat for the past twelve years.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. DISASTROUS HAILSTORM. Sydney, Dec. 27. A disastrous hailstorm in the Orange district did damage to orchards and crops estimated at £20,000. PAPUAN DIRECT REPRESENTATION. Port Moresby, Doc- 26. A mass meeting of citizens adopted a motion urging Mr. Hughes to grant Papua direct representation in the Federal Parliament.
