FIRES ON STEAMERS.
NOT CONFINED TO EX-GERMAN. A REWARD OFFERED. By Telegraph .—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Dec. 26, 12.20 a.m. London, Dec. 22. The Commonwealth Line has offered £IOO reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators of the Boonah fixe. The numerous outbreaks are causing uneasiness in shipping circles, especially as they are not confined to ex-German steamers. ,
It has just transpired that while the Beltana was waiting to embark passengers four fires broke out in different cabins. AH were promptly extinguished, and the damage was the slightest. Passengers were not aware of the outbreaks, the last of which was extinguished as the first passengers were mounting the gangway. The departure was not delayed. The latest wireless from the Beltana reports "all well," there having been no further outbreaks.
AN OFFICIAL INQUIRY. Received Dec. 26, 12.20 a.m. London, Dec. 22. In the House of Commons, Sir Auckland Geddes said investigations were proceeding to ascertain the causes of fires on ex-German vessels. Probably some were due to old bunkers not having been cleaned out.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
