AIR ROUTE.
BRITAIN TO INDIA. FUTURE DEFENCE SCHEJI^ By Taleeraph.—Press Assn.—Copyrleht. Received December 19, 11.30 p.m. London,. Deo. 19. In the House of Commons Mr. Winston Churchill (Secretary of State for War), in justifying a vote of £50,000 for aerodromes at Cairo, Bagdad, and Karachi, said that these were only the beginning of aerodromes required on the Indian route. Cairo to Karachi was considered an important section of the route from London to Australia, and could be finished be- ] fore the rest of the route was ready. Moreover, Cairo, Karachi, and Bagdad would contain garrisons of the Air Force, and it was hoped to hold these places largely by the instrumentality of the air instead of by a large number of troops. They would probably line the air by squadrons distributed along this section. Apart from defence the aerodromes would prove very convenient for mails and passenger flying apd would have the effect of buttressing the Empire together. The vote was carried by 224 vote 3 to forty.—-Aus.-N-Z. Cable Assn.
