Sir Wm. Fraser, Minister for Public Works, has been appointed to the Legislative Council. He will retain- his portfolio as Minister for some weeks.—Press Association. Captain G. Hooper, of the training ship Amokura, has been appointed nautical adviser and chief examiner of masters and mates, —Press Association. Captain W. H. Hawkins, who has been travelling throughout New Zealand during the past few months in connection with the prohibition cause, returned to New Plymouth last night. Mr. T. A. Bailey, S.M., who Will in future preside at the Hawera Magistrate's Court, was yesterday welcomed by the Hawera Bar and police. In the course of his reply, Mr. Bailey said he had no doubt that Hawera, in the future, would have a resident magistrate.
