PERSECUTION OF JEWS.
ZIONISM THE ONLY EEMEDY. SMUTS ON NEW STATE. London, Nov. 17. The Jewish Correspondence Bureau reports that at a large demonstration in Johannesburg, held to celebrate the second anniversary of the British Government's declaration in favor of a Jewish Palestine, the Prime Minister of South Africa, General Smuts, referred to the outbreak of anti-Jewish persecution in Eastern Europe, and said that the late Getrerai Botha Had resigned" tliff Chairmanship of the Polish Commission at the Peace Conference owing to the atrocities in Poland. General Smuts declared that Zionism was the only remedy for Jewish persecution, and paid a trimite to the Jews for steadfastly maintaining their national ideals. The declaration by -Mr. Balfour concerning the future of Palestine, said Geieral Swujts, could be regarded as certain <jf realisation the conclusion oif the Tifeaty witfr Turkey. Britain would redeem her pledge, despite the difficulty aird delicacy of the position, apd a great Jewißh State would ultimately arise. It was the mission of the Jews to reconcile national with international inthreats, and thus assist in the building up of new international orders.
