MEAT TRUSTS.
BRITISH METHODS TO CHECK THEM. By Telograph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Dec. 13. • The committee. on meat, referring to anti-trust measures, agrees that it is advisable to provide ready means of intervention so as to check practices detrimental to the public interest. It recommends statutory licenses for >mporters, dealers requiring licenses to furnish information relating to the ownership of their businesses and afford facilities for the examination of their books. They also should furnish periodical returns showing their past and expected receipts of meat. The committee adds: "But effective measures for dealing with trusts require legislation of a general character and may necessitate international co-. operation." A minority report, to which Sir T. BRobinson, Agent-General for Queensland, subscribes, declares that a subsidy or guarantee of business to British work 9 operating in South America is necessary in order to secure their continued existence, or the British Government should acquire and run the works; in either case requisite and sufficient insulated shipping should be provided by the British Government.—Aub and N.Z. j Cable Assn.
