According to latest advice, Mr. R. H. Nolan, who waa recently reported tp be seriously ill in London, has considerably improved in health. Mr. George McMorran, headmaster of the Terrace School, Wellington, is retiring after 3a years' service. The School Committee, the staff, and the past and present pupils are arranging a farewell ceremony and presentation at the Town Hall. , * Major-General Sir E. W. C. Chaytor has assumed the duties ot general Officer commanding the New Zealand Defence Forces, vice Major-General Sir A. W. Robin, retired. Major-General Robin is going to Samoa to take over the duties of Administrator for several months, during the temporary absence of Colonel R. W. Tate. Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., was farewelled by the members of the Hawera Bar yesterday, and appreciation was expressed of the manner in which he had carried out his duties. The Magistrate, in returning thanks, said it waa only human to be pleased when one's work met with appreciation. Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., takes over Magisterial duties in Hawera. Miss Rosina Buckman has been engaged by Sir Thomas Beecbam to appear at his coming season of grand opera in Knglish at Covent Garden, states a London correspondent under date Oct. 22. The repertory will appeal to operagoers of all tastes. For the first time the great mystery drama, "Paraital," will be sung in English, and Stravinsky's "Nightingale" (perhaps the most remarkable of the productions during the Russian season of 1914) will I>e a revival, Madame Elsa Stralia has also been engaged for the same season.
The death took place at Napier yesterday morning of Mrs. Glasgow, wife of Mr. A. H. Glasgow, manager of the Union Bank of Australasia at Napier. Mrs. Glasgow was very well-known in New Plymouth, where Mr. Gla»gow was manager of the bank for a number of years, and her death will be regretted by a large circle of friends. For some time Mrs. Glasgow bad been in illhealth, and on Friday she underwent an operation, but her condition was not such as to prepare her friends for the news of her death. Mrs. Glasgow belonged to Nelson, and was a niece of the late Colonel Pitt. Mrs. J. C. Nicholson, of New Plymouth, is a daughter of th« late Mrs. Glasgow, and there are also two sons.
