OPUNAKE.
(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) Politics are very quiet here. Even the prohibition and liquor question is flat. Much regret was expressed for Mr. Woolford and family over the sudden death of his daughter, Violet, which sad event took place on Wednesday night. The Town Board lias made a progressive move before Christmas. Fingerposts have been erected showing a fresh stock route through the township. The Opunake hydro-electric scheme will not .be started before this Christmas. Let us hope it will be before nest one. The date of the carrying of the poll is now getting ancient. The concrete piles for Messrs. Thorpe and Callaghan's new shop have been placed in position, and timber is on the site. Opunake is busy at present with a Queen Carnival and Christmas Fair. The former is in aid of the Convent School Fund, and the latter in aid of a fund for improving the public school ground*. In connection with the Queen Carnival, the various districts in the country have aspirants for the "throne," and are already marshalling their forces to urge their claims. The candidates are: —Pihama, Miss Stevenson; Opunake, Miss K. O'Brien; Oaonui, Miss M. Fleming; Pungarehu, Miss Jessie Aylward; Hibernians, Miss Stella Hiekey. The Opunake Harbor Board is quietly pursuing its endeavours to get formal permission from the Minister of Finance to raise the loan.
The unloading of cargo , from the U.S.S. Co.'s boat at Opunake is a tedious and slow process. a
