Captain Rosa Smith's landing was spectacular. Ho neeived a tremendous welcome. The Mayor presented an address on behalf of the citizens. The aviator, in replying, said: "I hoped to make the journey in thirty days, and X am proud to have accomplished it in tweny-eight," Despite the influenza regulations to the contrary, the crew rushed the aviators, and carried them shoulder high from the ground. MELBOURNE PREPARING. Many messages of congratulation. Received Dec. 10,10.15 p.m. Melbourne, Dec. 10. A shoftl of congratulatory telegrams bus been despatched to Captain Ross Smith on the completion of his great achievement. The Defence Department has approved the use of Fletomgton racecourse as a landing ground. Mr. Hughes refused a request to permit Captain Ross Smith to include Sydney in his aerial itinerary. He has cabled to Captain Ross Smith, suggesting the presentation of the machine to the Australian War Museum. STAGE ACROSS AUSTRALIA. -Melbourne, Dec. 10. The Defence Department has made arrangements for the flight of arriving airmen across Australia from Darwin to Melbourne, via Cloncurry, Charleyille, Bourke and Albury, where there will be stores of petrol. Flying officers to advise the fliers will be established at the various stations. This upsets the original proposals regarding landing. There wiH be public receptions at Brisbane and Syd»ey.

He wins the Australian Government's prize of £IO,OOO for the first Australian airman to fly from Britain to Australia.] CAPTAIN HOWELL. PLYING .IN THE BALKANS. London, Dec. 9. Captain Howell, who left London on December 4th in his Martinsyde machine, arrived at Taranto, in Italy, on the Bth inst. Be is leaving for Suda Bay, in (Crete, to-day! CAPTAIN WILKINS. meets With engine trouble. London, Dec. 9. ' Captain Wilkins, who left London on November 21st in his Blackburn Kangaroo machine, met with engine trouble off Crete on the Bth inst. He returned to Bud* Bay, in Crete, safely. Received Dec. 10, 8.40 p.m. London, Dec. '9. The Kaagftroo's return to Suda Bay was. due to the breaking of the main return oil pipe on the port engine. The return was accomplished on the starboard engine, notwithstanding the strain in the previous 627 miles flight from Tarfrtito to Suda Bay.
