DUST IN THE EYES OF THE PUBLIC.
: , To the Editor. \ Sir,—The publication of some corres- 1 uondence with regard to the Opunake- 1 New Plymouth railway is apropos of i nothing in particular, except that it is i a very transparent attempt to throw : dust in the eyes of the electors, and, i to boost a candidate who needs a boost ■ badly. Correspondence dated in July is ' not of any moment in the face of what i hapnened in Parliament three or four . months later. This railway was one authorised by the Railways Authorisation Bill brought down in October. In the absence of all the Taranaki members, except Mr. Smith, who was attending a meetirg of the Railways Committee, it was afterwards struck out of the Bill, to he again reinstated on the urgent representations of the Hon. 0. Samuel and Messrs Smith and Wilkinson. The need for this railway to be constructed has been advocated for years, and was certainly not originated by Mr. Buckeridge. If that gentleman thinks Jhat the people of North Taranaki do not 1 know the facts in connection with this 1 matter he is very simple; at any rate, • there is no danger of their being deceiv- • ed by such trivial nonsense. The electors recognise that Mr. Smith did good service in this, as ih,ma«y other matters, and will remember it on the 17th. I am, etc. " ELECTOR. New Plymouth, December 8, 1910.
