THE FARMERS AND MR. SMITH.
(Published by Arrangement) Sir,—The executive of the Farmers' Union of Taranaki have always made it a practice of asking its members to frame a list of questions just prior to a general election, and send them to all the candidates in the province, to which they are invited to send replies expressing their answers, "yes" or "no" to each, so that the questions and replies may ba published and the electors left to judge as they think fit on polling day. Now, ail the candidates sent in replies except Mr. S. G. Smith. If he had the interest of the small farmers at heart (as he says he has) he would have answered those questions to let the farming community know his view.-i thereon. I. with others, have a very strong suspicion that some of the questions did not agree with all Mr. Smith stood for, but even so, that is no reason why he should have slighted the farming community by not having the courtesy to acknowledge the receipt of theirs.—l am, etc., . FARM HAND.
