PLUMBERS' WAGES.
AN INCREASE WANTED. The journeymen plumbers of New Plymouth recently sent a letter to each of the 'employers asking for an increase of wages from 2/- to 2/« per hour, and requesting a reply by December 2. In the response made by the employers, they declined to accede to the request, but intimated their willingness to confer on the matter with the journeymen's delegates. At the conference, which took place on Monday last, the employers offered 1/11 per hour, with the result that the journeymen, yesterday, gavd tHeir respective employers notice at 8 a.m. that they would quit worK at 10 a.m., and this course was followed.
In the course of yesterday, the employers sent a letter to the chairman of the journeymen agreeing to increase the men s pay to 2/3 per hour, to commence immediately on resumption of work with overtime as per Dominion award' but this proposal was declined, the men adhering to their original demand, the reason for which is the increased cost of living and up-keop of tools at present prices. r
■ rhe negotiations are being carried »n in a friendly spirit, as there is ho desire on he part of the men to create a dispute," and it is hoped the matter will be settled amicably.
