FLYING IN ANTARCTICA.
'PLANE FOR THE POLE DASH. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. London, Dec 2. The Blackburn Company is constructing a single-engined biplane for Cope's Antarctic expedition to make the final 400 to the Pole. It will have j great, fiftinn capacity and carry four men, inciu ur - Cope and Wilkins, also a (• insider^ole,quantity of sledging and camping equipment and provisions for at least tea weeks, to meet an emergency in the event of the machine crashing, "necessitating a return on foot. It will carry sufficient petrol to cover 12,000 miles, owing to there being no likelihood of following a direct route.
It will start for the Pole from the Great Barrier at an altitr.ds A 5000 feet, but the machine must be capable of flying at 11,000 feet which, ow» u g s> the rarefied is eqaa'l to 21,000 feet in lower latitudes. It mnei be warmed throughout and the whole fuselage must be air-tight. The machine will be sent to Scandinavia in January to test its suitability for cold regions. . An oil-cooled engine, will be used, as a water-cooled or aircooled engine is impracticable, owing to freezing and fragility.
