TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Weights for tho Taranakl J.C. Christmas meeting are due to-morrow. Madam Ristorl has caught It pretty hot In her Taumarunut engagements. Tho next meeting of importance takes place tit Woodville on Wednesday and Thursday next. Met a chap at rcsildlng whose mate was slightly hilarious. "How did he get like thar'/" I asked. "Well, you see," replied the ) chap, "he's only a sprint boozer." He can't i Bta y ! " „ . Jockey Fred Kills, who came a "buster at > the Cup mcetinp, and of- whoso condition suc!i alarmist reports were in circulation. at:|>?ars U: have a good case for damages against a nouthern scribe who states that "Ellis' cracked head is getting on nicety." A Sydney paper reports that prior to returning to New Zealand, Mr. W. G. Stead made a present to Mr. N. Falkiner of the thres-year-old Ally Fluency (Demosthenes Los Vegas) for stud purposes. Flcuncy Is the ftily that wo all went for—with both hands, whiskers, and all—in the Fiteherbert Handicap at. the last Wellington summer meeting, but Affectation stoushed her by a length. Snub was tho best paying proposition of tho Kemball team in Australia, and altnough. looking much the worse for wear, ran Just outside the placed division in the Melbourne Cup. 1 At Felldiiut this, week Saub looked as fresh as
a forget-me-not, and his chance In tho Auckland Cup with 8.6 looks rather bright. Bobby Lewis, of whom much has- been written lately, had his first mount at the age of ten, and won. At that timo ho weighed only 3st Sits., and his 31 years of riding stand as a testimonial to clean living and regular habits. Lewis is one of tho best riders and judges of pace in Australia at present, and his son is following In father's footsteps. Don't count Festival out for his brace of defeats at Felldlng. Tho son of Hallowmas and Cruclnella has pace right enough, and with anything like decent starling wl I always be dangerous up to six furlongs. Ho ■should pay his way at Awapuni or Mnrton, at which places, by the way, Tllley's horses will bo racing this year end. Horses run in ail shapes, and some are good in dry or wet tracks, and bljllard champions ditto. The other evening, -trie rain was coming down in torrents, and, there being nothing bor.tor lo do, a crowd of sports monopolised a table at the good old game [if "phinaman." Then in walked the stranger, shaking tho rain off his shaggy whiskers he Picked up a cue and asked for a marble. What ho knew about "Chow" would have filled Stevenson, lnman, Mick Russell, or jfrank Julinn with envy. After ho had won six pools on end the marker asked him where he learnt to play like that. "Oh," ho replied, "I don't always play like this, but I'm terriblo good in wet going!" We thought so too. That weight of monoy docs not always make a horse win was instanced at Felldlng. Just prior to the St. Andrew's Handicap two hardheads were discussing tho candidate's prospects. "Well, I think Jloutoa Iranova will stroll In," remarked one. "What!" said his friend, pointing to the tolc, "you wouldn't back a horso paying a price like'that, would you?" "Let me tell you," returned the first speaker, "the race will be run over there (pointing to the track), not on the tote," He backed his opinion, and went on his way rejoicing. Tasman, in the Launceston Telegraph, says that tho meeting of the Deloralne Turf Club at the commencement of this month was unique, Inasmuch as it brought to a close the position held for tho last half century" by the club's starter, Mr. Geo. Bennett, and the commencement of a now roign by hla son, Mr. Roy Bennett. Mr. Geo. Bennett, after several attempts to resign the position, did so owing to his advanced age, he having reached tho nllotted span of threo score years and ten. Mr. Bennett's previous efforts to resign failed because the respective committees had too high an opinion of his ability to have any desire to lose him as starter, which was a high compliment to a man of his age. The Australasian's winning sires' list for the initial quarter of the current seasons shows Tho Welkin first with £7125, and Comedy king second with £6967. . The Melbourne Cup meeting, howover, caused those figures to undergo considerable alteration, and now Comedy King Is an easy first, Artilleryman nlono tacking £8525 on to his total. Trey's Maribyrnong Plate win gives The Welkin a substantial lift, but thanks to Klchmond Main's deeds It Is probable Prince Footo is now in second place.
