Even the Opposition newspapers welcome Lady Astor's election, on the ground that women should be represented in tha House of Commons, Mr. Lloyd George and Mr. A. J. Balfour will introduce her on Monday. She takes a scat reserved directly behind the front bench. The Speaker decided that she may wear a hat, a point whicli greatly exercised Commoners. Lady Astor says she will not appear in evening dress, but in the simplest gown, in order not to set an unfair }..ccedent for other women, who may possibly be obliged to rely on the £4OO stipend. An oak-panelled boudoir and writing room overlooking the terrace have been provided for her use, labelled "Lady members only." She may also use other clubrooms provided for members, except the smoking room.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [Lady Astor is an American and hails from Virginia. Lord Astor is her second husband, and they were married in 1908. Her husband has represented Plymouth since 1911 and Lady Astor has succeeded him in that scat, as Lord Astor has been elevated to the peerage.]
