Mr. Ernest Barnes has been appointed deputy Public Trustee at Hawera. General Bramwell Booth, of the Salvation Army, is expected to. tour New Zealand in April, accompanied by some of the leading officers from the London headquarters. The .Taranaki-Wanganui Methodist District Synod, which met at Marton last week, appointed the Rev. H. L. Richards, of New Plymouth,,as its representative upon the Stationing Committee of Conference, with the Rev. P. J. Cossum as substitute. At the recent meeting of the Eltham Borough Council a resolution of appreciation of the services'of Mr. J. H. Fowler, Government Audit Inspector, was passed. A similar resolution was accorded to Mr. C. A ; Wilkinson in connection with securing the freehold of the education reserve. Mr. James Findlay, the, New Zealand manager of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Shipping Co., was in New Plymouth on Saturday. In company with Mr. Newton King and the harbormaster (Captain W. Waller), he visited the harbor and also the company's steamer, the Kin Ora, which was taking in cargo at the wharf. Mr. A. Pi. Standish, of the firm of Messrs Standish and Anderson, has received notification of hi 3 appointment as solicitor to the Lands and Survey Department at New Plymouth,- for the transaction of business and the complet-. ing of mortgages, etc., under the Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Acts. Mr. David Weir and familv are passengers by the liner St. Albans from Hongkong, due in Sydney on November 29th. Tlie Sydney Commercial News states that Mr. Weir, "who is a brother of Lord Inverforth, and a director of the well-known shipowners, Andrew Weir and Co., intends making a short stay in New Zealand. Mr. J. G. R. 'Bryant, Director of Returned Soldiers' Settlements in New South Wales, is on a visit to New Zealand. Mr. Bryant is mainly interested in soldiers' settlements, and he is making a particular study of the,scheme in operation in this country. The death occurred at Manaia on Monday of Mr. John Somerville Ballantine, in his 84th year. The deceased gentleman was by profession a schoolteacher, but retired 'gome years ago. A widow and two sons, Messrs George Ballantine, of Manaia, and W. Ballantine, of Normanby, are left to mourn their loss, At the annual meeting of members of the Methodist Church, Wellington circuit, regret was expressed that "the Rev. J. G. Cliapman had, on the advice of his medical adviser, been obliged trf rest for a time, but it was confidently hoped that in a few weeks he would be at his post again. Gratification was expressed that the congregation kept well up to the average, and that the pulpit ministrations of Mr. Chapman were as fresh and vigorous as ever. The death of a very* eld and respected colonist in the person of Mrs. Elizabeth Copland occurred recently at Gre\ Lvnn (Auckland), j n her eighty-eighth year. Mrs Copland arrived 'in the colony from England in the year 1842, in the ship Fifeshire, with her father and sister. They landed at Nelson, and then took up land in Manaia. In 1816 they left Nelson for the Bay of Islands, and after a few months came on \ o Auckland, where Mrs Copland resided up till lic-r death. The Governor-General and Ladv Liver pool and suite arrived at Nelson on a farewell visit on Saturday morning. A holiday was observed and a very large gathering of citizens attended a civic welcome at the church steps. The ViceRegal party afterwards mr.de a round of visits to the colleges and other institutions, and were entertained af luncheon by the City Council. Ram in the afternoon necessitated the abandonment of a projected motor run through the orchard districts .and receptions at country centres. The party sailed in the Tutanekai in the evening for Westport.— Press Association. Mr. F. G. Kimbell, the manager of the Hawera branch of the Bank of Australasia, who has received advice of his transfer to Levin, has, say s the Star, been a resident of Hawera for nine .years, and during that period has been intimately associated with various activities of the town's patriotic affairs, sports bodies, particularly tenuis and bowling, and is also connected with the ttacing Club and A_, and P. Association. He has always been keenly interested in the territorials, and for 'the past 21 years has been officer commanding the , local B Company. Altogether Mr."Kimbell has been 25 years in Taranaki, and lie will take away with him the good wishes of a large circle of friends. Mr. Kimbell will be succeeded bv Mr. A. E. Rawson, of Temuka. Mr. Kimbell expects to leave for his Hew home in a fortnight. At the meeting of the TaranakiWanganui District Synod of the Methodist Church, held at Marton on Wednesday last, the following resolution anent the retirement of the Rev. T. G. Hammond was adopted: That, on the eve of the retirement of the Rev. T. G. Hammond from the active work of the Ministry, -this Synod wishes to express its ttjgli appreciation of tho Mug and heroic service rendered by him to the church and Maori people in face of great difficulties and discouragements peculiar to the Taianaki natives. This Synod expresses the hope, that Mr. Hammond way long be spared the church and urges conference to request Mr. Hammoucl to prepare a brief handbook dealing with ■ the Maori History and people for tho benefit of Methodists.
