LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A telegram from Palmerston North says that at a local Catholic bazaar interest centred around a prize packet competition. Mr. J. IC. Strang (Masterton), with No. 5463, was the winner. The Eltham Borough Council lias ap* plied for a loan of £IO,OOO for workers' dwellings, The council decided to take steps to raise a loan of £IOOO for a spiral gas holder and work connected therewith, also for a loan of £ICOO, the purchase prico of the freehold of tiie education reserve. The Auckland press message which said that the New Plymouth Boys' High School had challenged, and would play, Auckland Grammar School for the Heathcote Williams Shield on December I<J and IT, evidently was mutilated in transmission. It is the Palmerston North School team which is to make the trip north this month. In our recent report of cases dealt with at the Magistrate's Court it was stated ( that Charles Milner was fined £5 for allowing cattle to stray on Beacon Road. It should have read that, on the information of Charles Milner, county ranger, Horace Philips, of ftgaere, was fined. There was a large attendance of the public at Messrs Sole Bros' "Aotea" property, Avenue Road yesterday afterboon, when the grounds were thrown open and a recital given by the Citizens' Band, in aid of the funds of the New Plymouth Beautifying Society an'd the New Plymouth Tourist and' Expansion League. Many expressions of appreciation were heard of the generosity of the owners in opening the grounds, and of the beauty of the bush and the many ferns that are to be seen there. ' The programme played by the band was a most enjoyable one. Many old favorite numbers were given, whiie new items included the marches; "The Invincibles" (Rimmer), and "Our Fleet" (Safroni), an intermezzo by Liddicoat, entitled "Tile Alabama Rose," and the selection, "Gem s from Sullivan." Afternoon ten was provided by the Beautifying Society, and this, with the collection, realised a sum of about £2O.
"Have you any children?" enquired the landlord of a woman who was seeking tenancy of his house. Snappily the woman replied: ( 'I don't see what that has to do with you," and then, in a rather mournful tone, "but if you particularly want to know I have four—in the cemetery." The deal was at once concluded. Then the woman retrieved four children from the cemetery where she lmd left them to read about the virtues of dead landlords pending the result of her negotiations with a live one. The distresesd man consulted his solicitor, but was not given much hope of getting an order of ejectment, and the woman, it is understood, defends her finesse, holding that everything is fair in love and war—and in househunting nowadays. Such is the story told us, but we have not been able to verify it, for our cautious informant will not even tell u 3 the street in Hawern in which the house is situated.— Star. Tickets for the R.S.A. benefit entertainment on Thursday night, can be obtained from the High School Old Girls' Association, the R.S.A. Club, Avery's the B.K. Grfeat interest is being taken in the meeting of Mr. Bnekeridge, the Reform candidate, thi p evening, this being his first appearance as a politician on the platform in New Plymouth. As many electors are waiting anxiously to hear his views, and as the accommodation at the Empire may prove inadequate, an early arrival is advisable. The New Plymouth Horticultural Society has arrangements practically completed for its show, which takes place on Hnn r l a n aft * r , noo . n ?. ext ' at the Coronat 0 " H f ll , T le "Nations point to a very successful show. A special fcature will be the home industries section. There will also be a stall for the sale Of flowers. Entries close with the Becretwy (Mr, Val, Duff) at 8 Q > elock to .
