November 24. •With the object of raising funds for Dr. Barnardo'a Homes, an elocutionary recital was given in the Parish Hall by Captain Arthur Allen on Saturday evening. Other items were given by Miss Martin, Mr. B. Vivian, Rita Edgecombe, Marion Stevens, Phyllis Weston, Florrie Richardson, and H. Davies. A prize, offered for selling the greatest number of tickets, was won by Winnie Alger. The entertainment was quite a success in every way. There was a severe frost at Stratford on Saturday night, and potato crops, which were well advanced, were cut down almost to the ground. Butter beans and other tender crops were in many cases absolutely destroyed. Tenders for the right to conduct outside and inside publican's booths at Hie Stratford Taees on January Ist and 2ud, close on the 20th inst. KING'S CINEMA, STRATFORD. To-night at the^King's Cinema, Stratford, the latest Goldwyn photoplay starring Mabel Normand will be screened. Twenty years ago Rose Melville, th? creator of the part on the stage, set America rocking with laughter at tin queer antics anil philosophy of Sis. To day Mabel Normand, in the screen presentation, is meeting with even greater success, and Rose Melville herself admits that Mabel's impersonation is funnier than her own. This story of the little girl wh« wouldn't grow up and who found love in a barnyard and fortune in a well, will equally recommend itself to young and old. Those who have never laughed before will get the habit flrmly started by seeing the delightful little comedienne. WRESTLING AT STRATFORD SHOW. A wrestling match of importance will take place at the stadium on People's Day, at 2.30, between Joe Gardiner, the famous light-weight wrestler, and Percy Woods, the clever Hawera wrestler, for £lO a side. EotTT men were engaged in a contest at the Hawcra Winter Show about three years ago, and the return match is looked forward to bv Taranaki sports with keen interest.
