ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Eltham, Nor. 23. The garden party held on Thursday was a great success, both from the point of attendance and finance. Tho Prime Minister was in attendance, and if any one missed the chance of making his acquaintance it was not the fault of Mr. Wilkinson, who seemed to be everywhere. Tho stalls, etc, did good business, tho amount realised being about £l2O. A concert on Friday in aid of the Dr. Barnado llomcs was not so well attended, but those present thoroughly enjoyed the varied programme presented. The Pipe Band played outside the Hall prior to' tho performance, and later in the evening 4hreo of its members contributed an itefa. Tho Homes will benefit to tho extent of about £l2, Our local Lodge of Druids is to be visited by some of the Grand Lodge Officers on December 10th, when tho graud secretary, Bro. J. Grant will deliver a lecture on consolidating the funds of tho order. Opinions are very divided, this_partic:ular branch having some good investments, and being very souna financially. We wero visited with ft very heavy frost on Friday night, and next morning somo parts were quite white. Many crops are spoiled. Potatoes were cut right down, and mangolds, etc.', suffered ateo. Gardeners generally spent tho best parts of tho morning talking over the fences and condoling with each other. The Maty people hold a welcome home social on Friday, which was well attended It takes the country folk to givo the boys a warm welcome. In the towns wo seem unable to generate any enthusiasm over the home coming of the lads who havo dono so much for all of its, The local Pipe Band cabled home to Scotland for a price for uniforms. Tho replv showed terrific increases in cost, and for twelve uniforms £350 was asked. The Drum Major's uniform alone was estimated at anything from £33 to £4O. The matter was held over, and a meeting will be held on Tuesday night. New members are offering, but tho price of instruments, etc., at present is prohibitive.
