Tho Australian Jockey Club has .submitted a scheme to the Government for the improvement and curtailment of racing. Tho olubs concerned har.e mutually agreed to accept a reduction by eighteen pony meetings, fourteen metropolitan trots, and eighty provincial meetings. This leaves sixty-two registered horse meetings, fifty-four unregistered pony, and twenty-six trotting meetings in the Metropolitan area, besides nbout fifty provincial meetings. (By "Moturoa.") The South Canterbury J.C. spring meeting , concludes to-day. Trainers P. Johnson. R. Barlow, and E. George will have horses raeln? Nt Takapuna to-morrow. After giving promise of fine weather right Up to the last moment, the rain came down 1 In torrents on Wednesday, and the Aahhurst : meeting was anything hut an enjoyable meet- . lug for patrons: Trobably owing to the stato of the track Bcratchings were very numerous at Ashhurst. 1 and those'who rushed the shorl-prlced doubles r didn't get a run for their coin. I Most of the heads went for Zeus in the • Hack Hurdles, and the Martian gelding dulv : landed tho goods, but had Rlenzi fenced better he might have upset the pot. When the pen was put through Esthonla's name in the Pohangina Handicap, the liivers must have rejoiced largely, for the New Plymouth prad had been coupled with Daytime, Multatne, and Roso Pink for a heap of money. However, Mr Scally preferred the Hack Welter, in which Es'honla finished third. Sir Fanciful moved stiffly In his preliminary prior to the Flying Hack Handicap, and It was reported that he had been sore for , fame .time. The slush suited him, and when A Olliirr asked him to go 011 r.nd win, he did the trick handsomely. Incidentally he paid the limit. What a marvellous maro Rose Pink I*! In . spite of hard, continuous racing over all distances, and on all courses, she stripped a perfect picture at Ashhurst, and in tho Cup . beat all but Multalne, to whom she was conceding 181bs. The Speaker looked very . pretty, but could not act in the going Thanks to scratehlngs reducing the field to five Mullaino paid a good price. ; There Is no doubt about the duality of Elctillus. The Lucullus gelding was an even . money order in the Komako Welter, and ■ nothing else had a chance from the word "go." March On, who followed the favorite . home, returned a similar price for second place, 1 The Marlon trainer Jim Coyle started two horses, Ambcrine (Kllbrnnev—.imhrosian), and . Hautawa (St, Paul—Ebb Tide), 'i the Maiden, but they had to put up with minor places behind Import (Birkenhead—Snratura). The latter Inherits the Birkenhead liking for a wet trad;, and won nicely. When Esthonla was produced for the Raunini Welter, the, public rushed tlio machine and emptied out, but the moral came undone, tho winner turning up in tho outsider Gold Problem, who suprised most people by getting to the end of seven furlongs when five 1 was supposed to be his limit. 1 Sir Fanciful was saddled up again in the Gorgo Handicap,, and ran a great race, but Momac held tori many guns for him in the run home.
