Detective J. Torrance arrested a man at Wellington on Thursday on a charge ef stealing £95 at New Plymouth. Mr. A. At a meeting of the brigade on Tuesday evening a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Corrigal, and the hope was expressed that other donations of books would be received. At yesterday's meeting of the Hospital Board, the chairman (Mr. M. Fraser) referred to the litigation in which the Board had been involved by reason of the action taken to get one of its tenants out of a cottage belonging to the Board, which had to'be moved to clear the site for the new nurses' home. Mr. Fraser said he thought, the time had arrived when they should abandon the sentimental policy they had adopted in the past of refraining from turning tenants out. of houses whiel had been condemned as unfit for occupation. He thought that as the Board had been accused of keeping insanitary places for letting, they should take the proper legal steps to have them destroyed, no matter what the fate of the tenants might be. On his motion, therefore, seconded by 'Mr. G. Young, it was decided to give tenants in any such places proper notice, and take steps to have the places destroyed. " At the employers' meeting at New Plymouth on Tuesday evening, Mr. .Tames Milne, manager of the Farmers' Meat Company, in speaking on the subject of bringing about improved relations with employees, said employers should first of all improve the conditions of working. It could not be denied that there was big scope for improvement, particularly in Neiv Plymouth, in the accommodation given to employees in factories, shops and offices, t'nless these were made bright and healthy, they could not expect the best results from employees. The statement met with the hearty approval of the meeting. The Farmers' Co-op. notify that direct shipments of Walpole Island guano, and Surprise Island guano, will arrive at New Plymouth at about the end of November, also a shipment of "Ephos" basic phosphate is due a: New Plymouth to-day (November 20.)
