STRATFORD.
(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) (All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.) (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) Nov. in. A movement is on foot to erect an Anglican church at Whangamomona. It has been suggested by Bishop Averill, who has been on a visit to the district, that, as the Church of England is the national church of the British Empire, the building should be erected by all sections of the community as a memorial to fallen soldiers, whose names could be engraved on a tablet. A committee of residents in Whangamomona and the surrounding districts was formed with a view to carrying the project into effect. Mr. McCutcheon has already given a substantial donation. Realising the necessity for having a medical practitioner at Whangamomona this year, the Horticultural Society has decided to hand the proceeds from its show this year to the Medical Association. Mr. W. P. Kirkwood presided at a meeting of the Stratford Railway League, held last cv -ning. The Hon. J. B. Hinc wrote, stating that he would see the Minister for Public Works in regard to the introduction of steam navvies and other modem mechanical devices in connection with" the construction of the Stratford-Okahuknra line, and would inform the League of the result. The chairman said he did not think that much more could be done till they had a new Minister for Public Works. It was reported that a canvass by the secretary (Mr. Power) for new members had been very successful. The membership, it was stated, now totalled 72. A subscription was received from the Hon. ,1. B. Hine. The matter of making arrangements to meet Mr. McVilly on his visit to Stratford, and placing before him the position respecting the railway leases, was left in the hands of the chairman. The chairman stated that a sum of £30.000 had been placed on the Estimates for the cast end of the Stratford-Okahu-kura line, and £200,000 for this end, and these amounts could be exceeded by 10 per cent. The difficulty, however, was not so much in getting an amount on the Estimates, but in getting it spent. With the object of raising the money with which to improve the Stratford school grounds, a bazaar will be held early in December. Hearty support is being received, and the ' preparations should soon be well in hand.
