WAVING THE RED FLAG.
INCIDENT AT A MEETING AT WANGANUI. A considerable amount of comment has been occasioned in connection with an incident at the political meeting of Mr. MTlvride, Labour candidate at Wangamii, on Wednesday night, the chairman having waved the red flag when appealing to the audience to give three cheers for the candidate. The object of the chairman in doing so is hard to understand, because- the act provoked but a poor response, and alienated a good deal of sympathy from the candidate. Mr. M'llvride expressed his inability to give a delinition of sane Labor. Although Mr. Holland was the Lender of the New Zealand Labor Party to-day, there was no authority for saying he would be the leader after the elections. There was no "moderate'' man in the Labor Party. Tn answer to a question as to whether he favored the "go slow" policy, Mr. M'llvride said he could not agree that there had bijen any "go slow'' policy, so far as the workers were concerned, because, with the aid of machinery, production had been increased a thousandfold. The workers, had never adopted a "go slow" policy, but the employers had. He admitted the Labor Party had nothing against Mr. Veitch. He had been asked to link up with the New Zealand Labor Party, but for certain reasons had not accepted the invitation to become a member.
