A SAFE DYNAMITED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Nov. 17. The of the Penkins Furnishing Co., in the old skating rink, Vivian Street, wore visited by burglars on Friday night. The safe was dynamited, hut the haul only amounted to three or four pounds. It was evidently done by an experienced cracksman. The safe door was blown right off. Felt packing was put around thp safe to deaden the sound, but neighbors heard a muffled explosion. It is believed the robbers entered the building before closing time on Friday and secreted themselves, as there was no sign of a forced entry. The building is lurge and full of furniture, so presented no difficulties to anyone stowing away. RAILWAYMEN'S WAGES. Dunedin, Nov. 17. Mr. George Matthewson, stationmaster at Addington, has been appointe'd by the New* Zealand Railway Officers' Institute to sit as the instituted representative on the Wages Board the Government is setting up to report on questions affecting wages and working conditions of railway servants. Mr. E. C. Morgan, of Dunedin, general secretary of the institute, will be the organisations representative before Ihe board. THE HOUSING PROBLEM. Wellington, Nov. 17. The Labor Department has completed the purchase of 70 sections at Miramar for the erection of workers' dwellings, and a contract has been let for the erection of 4ft in concrete, and negotiations are proceeding for the erection of 51 more at Miramar and 15 at Petone. Other contracts let are for 8 at Masterton, 12 in Auckland, 4 at Nelson, 3 at Timaru. With the exception of the Kelson houses all are of concrete.
COMMISSIONS IST THE ARMY. Wellington, Nor. 17. It has been decided that an allowance of os per diem, in lieu of the provision of actual subsistence, will in future be trranted to men attending the artificial limb factory in Wellington or the workshops for repairs at other centres, providing such attendance is authorised by thn A.n.M.S. of the district the man resides in. The War Office has notified that applications will be received from eolotiial officers desirous of obtaining permanent commissions in the Regular Imperial Army. The conditions are now under consideration by the Imperial authorities, but applications will be received in the meantime for such appointments in ease the candidates are required. ~ A DARING BURGLARY. Auckland, Last Nignt. A daring burglary was perpetrated at Grey Lynn early on Saturday morning, a cordial factory being broken into and a safe !-• the office blown open. About £3O in cash was secured by the thieves. A heavy charge of explosive was used, and residents in the vicinity heard a loud explosion.
