THE ELECTIONS.

THE BALCLUTHA SEAT. ;. By Telegraph.—Press Association., Dunedin, Last Night. Mr. R. A. Rodger, Independent candidate for the Clutlia seat, spoke at Balclutha on Friday night. Ho contended ,there should be oniy two parties in Parliament, progressive and extreme labor. He supported the nationalisation of public health, restrictions on the export of timber, a vigorous immigration policy, a progressive public works policy, and legislation, for attacking the cost of living problem in earnest and making profiteering impossible. He hoped a sane and progressive Government would rise from the ranks of the new Parliament, selected from either the • Liberal or Reform side, and supplemented by members returned nnder any ticket other than extreme labor. MR. MASTERS' CAMPAIGN. Mr. R. Masters, the Liberal and Labor candidate, addressed a large audience at Tututawa, over 00 being present. The candidate spoke on lines similar to his Stratford address, stressing the question of a joint co-operation company, consisting of the State, the exporters and importers, who should secure their own shipping. Mr. Masters pointed out the enormous suras to be saved by that means. In speaking of the pure seed question it.seemed absolutely unfair that a seed merchant could ruin a farmer with impure seed containing noxious weeds, and he had no recourse. Mr. Masters' said that he would strongly advocate that seed should be in the same category as foodstuffs, and a heav;- penalty enforced for selling impure seeds. The meeting was keenly interested in the address and applause was frequent. At the conclusion, Mr. J. B. Norris moved a very heartv vole of thanks to Mr. Masters and full confidence that he is the man to represent them in Parliament. Thin was seconded by Mr. Geo. Brooking and carried unanimously. Mr. .Taeobsen presided over an orderly and enthusiastic meeting. It was an appreciative audience of between 20 and 30 people who listened to Mr. Masters at Puniwhakau. The candidate's remarks strongly eondomniag the Education Act, as it affects the back block settlers, were heartily applauded, and fully appreciated by those present. On the motion of Mr. J. Ryan, seconded by Mr. Clegg, a vote of thanks and confidence in Mr. Masters was carried unanimously. Mr. H. Worthington occupied the chair.

MAJOR TUNE'S MEETINGS. Major Hine hpd a very successful meeting at Douglas_ on Thursday evening, when he addressed a large number of electors in the hall. The chair was occupied by Mr. Needliam, and the speaker received an attentive hearing, his address being on the lines of those given at Stratford anjl Whangamomona. At the conclusion of the meeting, a vote of confidence, moved by Mr. Moir, and seconded by the Rev. Akers, was carried unanimously. Major IJine had a good meeting at Huiroa on Friday evening, about 40 electors being present. i Mr. T.ogaii occupied the chair. As usual, the speaker received an attentive bearing. At the conclusion, after referring in praiseworthy terms to Major Hine's good services both at the front' and as a Cabinet Minister, Mr. Wallace moved, and Mr. Eeauchamp seconded, a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker, and also a motion of confidence in Mr. Hine and the Government.
