NAVAL DEFENCE.
THE NEW TRAINING SHIP. REPLACING TIIFPHILOMEL. By Telegraph.—Press .Association. Auckland, Nov. 15. Mr. Massey stated lip lias received a cable stating that several important alterations will have tc be made to the vessel chosen as the most suitable for New Zealand's training ship. The Dominionwill have to bear the cost of the alterations. Though in receipt of no definite information, he expects she is a vessel of about 2000 tons. The Premier also said that the cruiser to take the place of the Philomel until we are bale to take charge of a vessel of the Canterbury type, may arrive in May or June next. He expressed the opinion that when the Canterbury comes, this temporary vessel will probably be kept on the station as,part of the Eritish Fleet in New Zealand waters.
