A charge of profiteering was made against the Bank of New 'Zealand list week by Mr. George Barclay, ths Liberal candidate for Ellesmere. He said that last year the bank had made nearly lOC per cent., and if that was not profiteer ina:, all that he could say was that if the farmer made such a profit, an outcry would soon be raised. At the last quarter the banks had 30 millions lying at call, on which they paid no interest, .although they lent most of it out to 'clients at interest. On the other hard. the Post Office paid 3J per cent, on its deposits, and yet lent the Government over 27 millions at the end of 1917. besides a million to local bodies. A State bank, working on right lines, cauld bo of enormous help to the agricultural and industrial community, and agricultural banks in the various centres, giving cheap advances to farmers, would be immeasurably better than paying high rates to business firms.
