DISTRICT NEWS.

MAKETAWA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) There were two meetings held at the Maketawa factory on Mond,,y night, the 10th inst. The first, a meeting of .-ettlers of the area formerly served by the Miro, To Tawa, and 'Piakau ;.om offices, which are now closed owing' to various changes that have recently taken place. The second, the regular monthly meeting of the Maketawa branch of the New Zealand Farmer-' Union, and thoiich. the night was one of the worst lately experienced here, there was a good representative attendance from all round the locality.

Mr. J. H. Stephens, who is the chairman of the above-named branch of £\e N.Z.F.U., presided, and Mr. Simpson, the secretary, explained the steps he had taken in compliance with a resolution of the branch to try to get better pos--tal facilities for the district, sneaking highly of the. courtesy shown hint by the postal officers at New Plymouth, and explaining that the postmaster there had made the bast offer within the scope 01 his authority, which, however, was not sufficient to meet the wishes of the residents. After long discussion of the position from all points, the mooting decided to use every endeavour to secure a rural post delivery all round, and dennW Messrs. Byrne, Gihbs, and Simpson, representing' the Rugby, Norfolk and Durham Roads, respectively, to wait on the chief postmaster at New Plymouth and consult with him on the best steps to be taken to secure their wishes.

The meeting of the Farmers' Union branch followed without the gathering breaking up. The usual formal business was gone through. Correspondence was read from the provincial Mxcutivo and the Farmers' Co-operative Organisation Association with regard to the supply of seeds, manures, and machinery as well as matters of insurance, but as the first meeting, had taken up so much time, discussion was postponed to the next, regular meeting, unless the offers deemed it advisable to convene a special one earlier to receive the report regarding postal matters.
