After elaborating the Nationalist policy at the Town Hall, Mr W. M. Hughes, (the Commonwealth Premier), retired to his hotel: A crowd of "Diggers" assembled at the hotel, apparently with the object of demanding a cash gratuity. When Mr Hughes refused to appear, the mob attempted to burst open the doors of the hotel. A melee ensued, in which the police were stoned. One constable was injured, and was conveyed to hospital. The police then charged with batons, and dispersed the crowd_ —Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
