I THE PAYMENT IN AUSTRALIA. ' USING THE INDEMNITY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. 4, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, Nov. 4. Mr. W. M. Hughes explains the Government proposed to cover twenty-five million bonds as a war gratuity in the following manner. Firstly, tha Treasury will take up at least half a million of them annually. Secondly, they will earmark the whole of Australia's share of the German indemnity, estimated at between seven and fifteen millions, and due in May, 1921. for the redemption of the bonds. Thirdly, if the indemnity received by the date named is below ten million the Government' will make good the deficiency up to ten million. Fourthly, the Government w"ill redeem the balance outstanding in bonds after May, 1921, in not more than three annual instalments. The Government has undertaken ,to accept the bonds as cash equivalent for all purposes under the Repatriation Department. including land settlement, home building, purchase of businesses, or to cash them in cases of hardship, urgency, or when a soldier marries «r a widow re-marries.
