ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Eltham, Nov. 1. The meeting of the Eltham Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday night was mainly devoted to suggestions for the purpose of advertising Eltham as a stopping place for persons visiting Mount Egmont and Dawson's Falls. .Uhe trouble generally seemed to be the luck of accommodation. Another matter was the delivery of parcels between 7 and 8 p.m. after the arrival of the mail train This concession has since been granted, with exception of registered ami other letters. Te Roti was visited by Mr. Astbury on Thursday evening, Mr. W. Cleaven presiding. Mr. Astbury received a'very attentive l hearing and the meeting closed With a vote of thanks. On Friday, the Te loti roll of honor, containing the names of the men of the district 'who served during the great, war, was unveiled at the public hall. There was a good gathering of visitors from the surrounding districts. Mr. Cockerton called on Mr. G. W. Tayler, Mayor of Eltham, to perform the ceremony. He requested those present to stand for a moment in silence in memory of the fallen. This was done, and later, in the course of his remarks, he stated that although pleased with the gratuity granted to returned men, he would have preferred that all the members, irrespective of rank, should have received £l a week for life. This might be thought ft heavy expense, but nothing could ever repay their service. After a few words to the children present he unveiled the roll of honor. Other speakers were Captain Kimbell (Hawera), Lieut. Kirk, Mr. S. M. Mahoney, and Major Sutherland (Manaia),
The official opening of the Bowling Club took place on Thursday afternoon in glorious weather. The president (Mr. VP. D. Ross) welcomed those present, including some visitors from Stratford, and presented some trophies that had been won last season. He then invited Mrs. Ross to open the play by throwing the jack. The usual president v. vice-presi-dent match resulted in a win for the former. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies.
A meeting of the Eltham Athletic League was held on Friday evening, when it was decided to hold a sports meeting on Boxing Day at Tuamata Park. A lengthy programme was sketched out, the prize money being close on £IOO.
Oil Saturday I noticed that they were clearing up ready to make a start on the new Farmers' Co-op. store in Bridge Street.
The hoardings are also down from the front of Goldstone's new premises, giving us some idea of what is going to happen there. This shop, when finished, should bo one of tho best, if not the best, in the province, particularly in the matter of window space, it having a very large island window, the first in this town. Quite a number of vehicles were on the road to that popular resort the N'gaere Gardens to-day. The few showers of rain which have fallen since Saturday morning have freshened up things wonderfully. The "cockies" were beginning to look very serious, as the creeks and wells were running dry, and in some places the springs even were giving out. However, this will put things right. The milk yield will go up, and everyone will be happy again. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting the other night a speaker declared that, you could not get a good meeting in Eltham, as people would not attend. Well, sometimes it is bad management. Take next Wednesday. Mr. Hawken speaks at the Eltham Town Hall 1 ; the School Committee meet; the Foresters have an important meeting, re the doctor business; the Oddfellows meet on the same night, and for tho same object, so some of the meetings will be poorly attended. Few women can resist the magic words ,; new fashions", and you will be thoroughly delighted at the Bummer millinery now exhibited at Shipton's. The showroom i 9 a veritable garden of flowers with all the lovely models and ready-to-wears, etc. Call and view Shipton's Corner, Eltham.
