SOLDIERS' GRATUITIES.

NONE FOR HOME SERVICE. (By Wire. —Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Last Night. Sir Joseph' Ward asked in the House this morning if the Government had considered the desirability of paying gratuities to home service men. Some of these men had made considerable sacrifices and he had suggested they should receive a gratuity, say 25 -to 50 per cent, of what wps paid to the men who went overseas. "I have very carefully considered the suggestion," replied Sir James Allen, "and I regret that I must make a clear and definite statement that the country cannot afford to pay any gratuities other than the gratuities it is now paying. No gratuity can be paid to home service men."
