TURF TOPICS. (By- "Moturoa.") Melbourne Cup to-morrow. Solfanello has broken down. Desert Gold is to contest the Stewards' Handicap. Weights for the Asbhurst meeting are due to-morrow. ATthur Oliver'will tide Hetaua In the Great Northern Guineas. Zola will contest the hurdle race on the second day pt the A.R.C. spring meeting. Marqucteur's weight in the Plying Handicap at Ellerslle is 812, not 8.11 as telegraphed. Mascot got knocked about during the running of the Champion Plate, but it should not interfere with her Cup preparation. One of the best workers at Riccarton Is Onslaught, and now that he has begun to win again ho reads like a possibility for the Stewards' Handicap. Reg. McSeveney, the well-known rider over fences, is getting into the trotting game, and at the North' Canterbury meeting drove Gold Queen home in front of a big field. In addition to Volo, Bingham, Sliver Link and Inah, Paraoa, Austin, Sea Sprite, Hushman, and Egmont Park have been freely engaged- at the Canterbury J.C. Metropolitan meeting. Those who twigged Karo finishing at Trentham on Monday are saving up for a decent plunge. If she doesn't win a race at Riccarton this scribe is game to go back to work. Hindi's withdrawal leaves twenty-one horses in the New Zealand Cup, but the final payment of a tenner, due on Wednesday, may stop a few. , It Is reported that Affectation will he reserved for the Derby, and if this Is so it will prove a facer for a number of big antepost bettors. The three-year-old's admirers thought they had found another triple crown hero, like Seahorse. "Digger" Eric Julian, late of Inglewood, visited his home town at the tail end of last week, and reports further conquests, this time in the ! matrimonial line. "Moturoa" adds his-'cidngratulattonß to those of the Inglewood eports; and hopes that "Tartar" will hop out in front, and make every post a winner. Down the line they are talking .about a trainer who grew' irate over the weight alloted his prad at Waverley, and just to prove the handlcopper wrong he started his nag. The nag walked home an easy winner I A proud owner-breasted the totalisator at Waverley to . ;)>ut' a tenner on his horso In the Wilson Stakes. "By gad, you're game I" remarked the ticket-seller. After 4he race the disapoplnted owner realised the truth of the remark. j While the horses were prancing about, at • the poßt before the Waverley Cup, an oldp timer said: "By jove, they ought to liavo been starting at Otaki In the 90's. They'd soon be brought up with a round turn." i tmtti tit «n MflUittiaK As Mid: "The
starter down there used to say, "Rine (n ne ) up 'ore, or I fine you to Ufe pound—and to punch oh te plurry nose tool" While mending a puncture outside a Maori's farm at Whenuakura; a party of sports en route! to the Waverley races were struck with the sight of a dozen or bo porkers, all of which had their tails cut off short. "What's the Idea of the tails being cut off?" one of our party asked a Native. "Oh, t'at te Maori earmark I" replied the dusky one. Of the horses left in the A.R.C. Welcomo Stakes, Dunedln (who ran second in the Ginicrack Stakes at Randwlck), Landslide (a double winner at Avondale), Luculhia and Weary Willie have most to recommend them. If Dunedln strips fit and well he should bo favorite.
For winning at (lie Wellington meeting Kllrtish will carry a 101b penalty in the New Zealand Cup, bringing his weight up to 7.13, Hurry Up goes up to 7.2, but Bonnie Heather's weight is not disturbed.
Taranaki promises to bo well represented at the A.R.C. spring meeting, which opens on Saturday next. Alteration. The chances of Simonldes and Alteration look brightest Some Boy, who was soro after running at Avondale, is now hitting out freely in his tvork, and promises to give us another taste of his quality at Ellersllo on Saturday and the following Wednesday. .Tncks'er .Ino Conquest, Tfho has had a mortgage on all the bad luck floating about during the past year is again doing riding work at Ellerslie.
Harold Young will ride Gay Lad and Onslaught in the Riccarton double. George Young will be on Heathercote in the Cup.
