THE MEAT COMMANDEER.
FUTURE ACTION UNCERTAIN
(By Wire.—Own Correspondent.)
Wellington, November 1. • A cablegram from London quotes a statement of the secretary of the Food Ministry that some form of Government control of meat might be needed. Mr. Field (Otalci) mentioned this matter in the House on Saturday night He said that apparently the imperial Government proposed to combat the operations of the Meat Trust, and he asked if the Prime Minister had any information as to whether the Imperial Government would be desirous of extending the requisition of New Zealand meat.
Mr. Massey replied that he was aware that the Imperial Government intended to take steps to stop the operations of the Meat Trust. In connection with supplies for the people of Great Britain he did not know ;'f anything had yet been done. He had. communicated with the High Commissioner asking for information as to whether the Imperial Government' wa,s willing to extend the commandeer of New Zealand meat, but he had not yet had a reply. When he did so he would inform the country and would take steps to consult with the producers.
